Learn to Swim Pathway
We have pulled together over 15 years of teaching, specialising in early years training and additional needs training to create a bespoke learn to swim programme for our academy swimmers.
Our core values include giving children the time to learn, creating a safe environment for them and devising a syllabus that is flexible so that we can successfully cater for different learning styles.
Our academy’s Learn to Swim Programme succeeds the STA Stanley Awards and Swim England Duckling Awards.
Children need to learn how to move through the water

Our philosophy is to develop FUNdamental skills such as blowing bubbles, floating in a variety of shapes and establishing a successful leg kick. Children need to learn how to move through the water, under the water and on top! Once these skills have been mastered we can then focus on refining strokes and perfecting technique.

Outcomes and Assessment

Toolbox of skills
It is the focus on skill development that makes our swimming syllabus effective. Equipping learners with a tool box of aquatic skills is an essential part of swimming development. Our approach to learning provides the individual with key skills to draw from to become proficient in all four strokes. Additionally, it also keeps interest levels engaged as children have the opportunity to experiment with different skills as they continually revisit, develop and refine.
Assessment
We regularly review the progress of each child throughout the year. Our team of swimming instructors have a briefing to review each child’s progress approximately every 6 months so that we can ensure they are reaching their full potential. This method allows us to adapt our teaching style if necessary to cater for specific individual needs. Regular assessment is ongoing so that achievements can be recorded and appropriate certificates are issued at the correct time. Formative assessments also assist with setting individual targets, again reinforcing each child’s needs.
Learn to Swim Programme Summary
A different coloured fish represents a range of key skills for every stage. As the children work seamlessly from one stage to the next, aquatic skills develop in sophistication and a tool box of skills is acquired.

Stage 1
(Approximately 4 years old)
At this stage we work on water confidence - learning how to become horizontal in the water, how to move in the water and how to kick in the water. We also encourage face wetting and blowing bubbles.

Stage 2
(Approximately 5 years old)
The focus is on learning how to float. Buoyancy aids are permitted with face in the water and learning how to submerge under the water. An efficient leg kick is developed and a doggy paddle arm action is introduced. At the end of stage 2, pupils can doggy paddle unaided with their whole face in the water and take a breath whilst continuing to kick.

Stage 3
(Approximately 6 years old)
Pupils learn the overarm front crawl action. The streamlined position is refined with a focus on gliding front and back. Breast stroke legs and sculling are introduced.

Stage 4
With a strong over arm action in place the pupils will learn aquatic breathing skills, timing and further refine streamline position.

Stage 5
Stamina is promoted and life saving skills introduced.
