The Journey Through Swim England National Plan Awards

The National Plan Stages 1 to 5 succeed the Duckling Awards and I can Awards.  The framework of the National plan is designed to develop aquatic skills as opposed to teaching children to swim up and down length after length compounding bad technique.

Each stage has a set number of outcomes to be achieved and as the children progress through the stages a tool box of aquatic skills is acquired.  It is this tool box of aquatic skills that is essential part of swimming development as it provides the individual with key skills to draw from to become proficient in all four strokes.  Additionally, it also keeps interest levels engaged as children are given the opportunity to experiment with different skills as they continually revisit, develop and refine.

This point can be explained in more detail by using an example.  In the example below, an aquatic skill (objective) ‘push and glide’ taken from the National Plan curriculum is used to demonstrate the point.

Aquatic Skill – Push and glide

‘Push and Glide’ Stage 1

Stage 1 – “push and glide in a horizontal position to or from the wall” buoyancy aids can be used to assist.

‘Push and Glide’ Stage 6

Stage 6 – “sink push off on side from the wall, glide, kick and rotate into Front Crawl.”

The aquatic skill (objective) remains the same ‘push and glide’ but it has been developed and refined from Stage 1 ‘basic idea of movement’ through to Stage 6 ‘a highly complex skill!’   We believe this teaching style should be implemented when teaching a range of aquatic skills to both reinforce and refine the skills over a period of time.

Planning and Assessment

As every child is unique we use ongoing assessment as our preferred model to monitor children’s progress and achievements.  This method allows for flexibility and a specific skill can be adapted as necessary to cater for specific individual needs.  Regular assessment is ongoing so that achievements can be recorded and appropriate certificates issued at the correct time.  Formative assessment also assists with setting individual targets, again reinforcing each child’s needs.

Tuesday  10.45 – 3.30pm

Wednesday 10.45 – 3.30pm

Thursday 10.45 – 3.30pm

Due to a perceived interest for swimming lessons that cater for the home education community we have devised a swimming programme that aims to meet this need.

We understand that home educators have an individualistic philosophy regarding the children’s learning environment.  However, swimming lessons are part of the current National Curriculum and we would like to provide the opportunity for home educators to access this curricular activity.

Swimming is a fundamental life skill and we believe all children should have suitable access to swimming lessons as part of the educational learning experience.  We are fortunate to be able to offer this service to home educators from our own private pool during usual mainstream hours.  We are able to offer both small groups and one to one lessons.

We believe in a relaxed approach to the learning environment and endeavour to create learning experiences for the early years children through play scenarios. As the children become more familiar with the environment a more formal approach can be delivered as swimming skills are demonstrated that can be practised, repeated and developed throughout the swimming journey.

The swimming syllabus that home school children follow reflects mainstream with additional flexibility to cater for individual needs of children.   Liverpool Swimming Academy is affiliated to Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) and children’s achievements are recognised using National Plan Awards for swimming these are compatible with any ASA organisation.

Summer Term

Bates Dairies

A group of children at Bates Dairies, Southport are working towards ASA Life Saving Skills including surface dives to retrieve brick, sculling and treading water.  In addition, we also introduced the butterfly ‘dolphin’ leg kick and found some children natural at this technique.

Autistic Spectrum Disorder

The venue near Crosby has proven a very popular for children with ASD.  The pool is situated in a private room within a gym complex and the water is lovely and warm.  Children with ASD and other complex needs are responding very well to the sensory environment and subsequently making great strides in water confidence and aquatic skills.

Gallery of Achievements

Liverpool Swimming Academy like to celebrate children’s swimming achievements.  Here are some awards the children have achieved during the Spring Term.

Intensive one to one Course May Holiday Dates

Course 1  – Tuesday 30th May to Friday 2nd May

The Benefits of an Intensive Private Swimming Course

The intensive private swimming courses are scheduled to operate during the school holidays.  This factor can have several benefits to children’s overall performance for reasons explained below.

Lessons are delivered during day time hours when children have more energy and this can be channelled effectively to develop swimming skills.

Due to a shorter interval between each lesson children are more likely to retain the information acquired from the previous lessons. This should allow for learning at a faster rate as children can pick up from the last lesson much quicker in comparison to weekly lessons.

Intensive courses can be a useful tool to improve competence levels of a particular skill that needs a little extra attention as the skill can be practised and repeatedly over the course over the week.

Price list for intensive one to one or two to one courses scheduled for the May Holidays

Course 1 Tuesday 30th May to Friday 2nd June
